Woman in Focus: Tina

It’s Women’s History Month, and we’re making the time to celebrate the incredible women who inspire us every day. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on our amazing customers - some of the most successful, inspirational, and strong women we know. Meet our wonderful customer, Tina, age 36 - A pilot flying corporate jets, a woman in tech and a jiu-jitsu fighter. She shares her connection with Women’s History Month, her story, and her background.

1. What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

Carving out a time to celebrate women resonates with me due to the incredible role women have played in shaping society.  Although we are underrepresented in higher political positions, women are often responsible for grassroots efforts to improve our local communities. Women have contributed to the arts, sciences, social activism, family planning, education, and much more and that should be celebrated. Although I do not have any children of my own, I'm proud to be part of the sisterhood that can create life.

2. Who is a woman in your life that deserves more recognition?

My mother and our family story of escaping the Liberian Civil War and building a life in America deserves recognition. My Mom left Liberia as a third year medical student, but once we were in the States, none of her previous education was considered sufficient to immediately apply to Medical School. Not to mention, we only had $3 American dollars to our name.  She cleaned homes, worked in department stores, and saved money until she could afford to repeat college credits.  She eventually found work at Baylor University and is a credited contributor to the Human Genome Project. She later was accepted into Medical School and is now at the end of her career as Emergency Medical Physician.  She is continually my inspiration; when I feel like I'm struggling, I just remember where we came from and how hard she worked to give our family a really great life.

3. If you could accelerate change in one area for women, what would it be?

I would love to see more women leading in politics.  Women may be the fairer sex, but I think our minds are wired to better navigate social situations and form deep connections.  We tend to be more well versed in expressing ourselves without the use of force or violence, and I think society would really thrive if women ran the world.
